Where volcanic peaks pierce the Arctic sky and thermal rivers steam through rainbow-colored valleys, Iceland’s otherworldly terrain transforms every run into an encounter with raw planetary forces. After tracing paths across ancient lava flows and between spouting geysers, your tired muscles find relief in the island’s legendary hot springs and thermal pools, a daily ritual that connects you to both the earth’s power and the heart of Icelandic culture.
We will shake off the travel and get straight into volcanic action at the Búrfell crater, situated in the Heiðmörk Natural Park! This local run is the perfect introduction to the Icelandic landscape, rewarding runners with sweeping views and the satisfying crunch of crushed volcanic rock under your shoes.
We will have a picnic lunch at the finish line before indulging in a recovery session in the famous Sky Lagoon for the afternoon. Between the steaming water, silica face masks, and cold beer, all of your post-run needs will be taken care of! After a lengthy soak, we will head back to the guesthouse for a hearty, home-cooked dinner.
Today we will hit the road to Reykjadalur, an amazing valley cut down the middle by a hot, steamy river. There are several excellent run options available, and all of them finish with a dip in one of Iceland’s famous public swimming pools complete with hot tubs and steam baths. After lunch at a local restaurant we will drive to see the incredible Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir hot water spout – the original one after which all other geysers are named! This is the heart of the ‘Lord of the Rings meets Game of Thrones’ landscape that you’ve been imagining! To round off the day we will head to a cozy, nearby guesthouse for dinner and a good night’s sleep.
We kick off today with an unforgettable point-to-point trail run through one of Iceland’s most dramatic river canyons. Starting at the towering Háifoss waterfall, we follow a route that traces the Fossá river toward the storybook oasis of Gjáin Canyon. Along the way we’ll pass the ruins of the Viking manor at Stöng, wind through lush valleys, and pause for plenty of scenic stops to take in waterfalls and striking volcanic formations. Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch at a unique restaurant supplied by a geothermally heated greenhouse. And after that? You guessed it – we’ll dip into yet another hot spring before heading back to the lodge to relax for the evening.
It is difficult to try to thank and describe this incredible life experience—taking part in this expedition in Iceland—in just a few lines. I want to thank and congratulate you for the organization of each and every activity we enjoyed during this time. Everything was organized: the hotels, the food, the activities that complemented the experience, all planned and executed perfectly. None of this would have been possible without the amazing team who made it happen. I congratulate you for your professionalism, your 1000% positive attitude, and the endless energy that made this experience UNIQUE. I also feel fortunate to have shared this with such a group of nature and running lovers. You made my first trail experience something I will never forget. I hope we can see each other again soon—without a doubt I want to live new experiences with you.
We had a wonderful time with Rouge Expeditions. From the moment of our arrival, the guides ensured we felt welcome and at home. Even prior to the trip, they were so helpful at getting our questions answered and helping us choose a trip that was right for us. We met amazing people on the trip, built friendships, learned a ton, and explored places we never would have went to without Rogue Expeditions. Plus, we had a lot of fun! While the schedule was packed, everything was worthwhile and there were essentially no issues with the trip the logistics. The one issue that arose due to weather was resolved super quickly — it was evident the team has great contingency planning. Overall, the planning was very thoughtful, allowing us time to stop by grocery stores for snacks, meander in local shops, and take our time on the trails — that being said, we were able to see a lot of popular destinations on our trip as well. Last, but not least, the runs we did were amazing — the right mix of challenge and beautiful landscape that had us fall in love with Iceland.
